Seabear – We Built A Fire

June 9th, 2010 | Posted in: music

Days like these need some good music. So meet Seabear. Seabear is proof that Iceland does bring good things, instead of credit crises and ash. This Indie band from Reykjavik has delivered an amazing album in We Built A Fire. Very nice tunes that I would describe as easy listening Indy Pop,  with the occasional surprise. What makes Seabear stand out from other Indy bands is the broad range of instruments used in the tracks; Brass, violins and rock guitars are all present.

In short: Cool album. Worth more than one spin.

Catacombkid

Last week Kitsune Noir pointed me to the album Deep Sleep by Catacombkid (a.k.a. Harrison Mills), and boy was he right. What an amazing album. Catacombkid’s  music is best described as dark, dreamy hip hop with a hint of pop. Catch my drift? This is one of those albums you put on repeat and have it play all day without it becoming annoying. And as a true next-level musician Catacombkid has made the album available for free. Go get it here!

Massive Attack – Heligoland

April 26th, 2010 | Posted in: music

It has been quite the wait, but finally Massive Attack have launched their new album: Heligoland. And I must say it was worth it. I have had it playing in the background for a couple of days. Heligoland sounds comfortably familiar, hard to capture in one genre and with the twist of darkness we are used to. Verdict: Great quality album, and already among the favorites of 2010.

Also check out the awesome video of the track ‘Splitting The Atom’ directed by Edouard Salier, whom you might know of the video he did for the Nike Women ‘Here I Am’ campaign, featuring Nicola Spirig.

Angus & Julia Stone – Down The Way

April 5th, 2010 | Posted in: music

It’s been a while since I last posted on music. The reason for this is that I haven’t found any albums worth mentioning lately. That was before I heard Down The Way by Angus & Julia Stone. What an album!

Angus & Julia have taken their familiar dreamy folk sound and have perfected it, making Down The Way and ideal Sunday morning chill album, although I can also see myself playing this record over and over driving to the south of France for a surfing holiday. Happy listening!

Music: Memory Tapes

Another nice band has made it’s way into my playlist: Memory Tapes. Their album Seek Magic is a very easy on the ears. The Folk music influences blended into it give the album a very positive vibe. A great album for those morning subway rides to work! Also interesting is obsession for sporty samples; so far I have discovered basketball shoes and billiards. Have I missed some?

Go get it!

2009, The year…

December 31st, 2009 | Posted in: misc.

Barack Obama gave hope a face but could’t stop the world from sliding into a financial crisis. And lets be honest, that Nobel Peace Prize came a little early,

A plane landed in the Hudson river and everyone survived,

Karst T. tried to attack our royal family, fails, but kills 7 people during his attempt,

Cambodia stole my heart,

Berlin celebrated 20 years of freedom,

Grandma and my aunt left for a better place,

While we welcomed little Hugo to the scene,

THEY became small agency of the year,

Michael Jackson moonwalked out of here,

The XX dropped their amazing album XX,

Swine flu had the world trembling,

Star Trek was the most downloaded movie (followed by Transformers, The Hangover and Twilight),

Barbie turned 50,

Twitter, Facebook and YouTube gave Iranian protesters a voice,

An airplane disappeard in the Atlantic,

The traditional lightbulb was banned,

No real decisions where made at the climate convention in Kopenhagen,

And a lot more…

Anyway, I want to thank you all for reading my blog this year. Things have really taken of thanks to you all! Let’s keep this growth up and make 2010 even better. I want to wish you all the best for 2010, and lets make it the best year yet!

See you next year!

Matt.

Mos Def Music Tee

June 25th, 2009 | Posted in: marketing, music

mos def album coverFinally people in the music industry are waking up and are starting to reinvent the business model! Instead of suing everybody for millions of dollars, some people are actually thinking about the future of the industrym and not fighting to preserve the past. Meet The Music Tee. Featuring the album artwork on the front,  the tracklist on the back and a unique code on the hang tag with a url and download code with which the album can be downloaded.

Created in collaboration with clothing line LnA, Downtown Music and Invisible DJ, the Original Music Tee was a mix tape release by Invisible DJ. Now rapper Mos Def is also launching his new album ‘The Ecstatic’ as a music tee. I haven’t been able to check out the album just yet, but as a marketer I think it is great to see that a main stream artist like Mos Def is picking up on this new creative initiative and promoting it to the masses. This proves to all musicians that there is still money to be made. The only thing is that you have to be more creative about it. People are still willing to pay for your music, the only thing you have to do is offer them something extra.

The Mos Def music tee will be available through Downtown Music from july 7th, and will sell for $40,-.

I find it a very interesting and smart business concept. How much do we spend on a tshirt usually? Easily more than $40,- right? So now I get a free album with it. Very smart thinking guys. Great marketing! I wonder how long it will take for the merchandise sellers at concerts etc to start complaining about their business being killed and unfair competition… Million dollar lawsuits anyone?
