powerHouse Books Brooklyn

When I was was in Brooklyn the other day, I wandered into the powerHouse Arena and was amazed by the quality of their collection, the cool photo exhibiton and the great looks of this store/gallery. powerHouse are the kind of publishers laughing at the fact that the internet is killing publishing as it was. In my opinion these are the guys who have carved a niche for themselves and are thriving.

powerHouse Books is best known for a diverse publishing program — specialized in fine art, documentary, pop culture, fashion, and celebrity books. I was especially struck by the quality of their photo books.

Since the company was founded in 1995 they have built up a massive portfolio of great work. So check out their website for the entire collection, and if you are in the neighborhood head for 37 Main Street, Brooklyn, NY and see for yourself!

Berlin: 20 years later

November 9th, 2009 | Posted in: art, photography

Picture 2Today, the 9th of November it is 20 years ago that the Berlin Wall fell, marking the end of the cold war and communism. At that time I was just 7 years old so I couldn’t grasp what was happening then But sometimes you just knew it was important, moreover because my parents let me stay up and watch the late night news with them. Ever since, these images of celebration have always stuck in my mind.

Twenty years on, the larger part of the wall has been removed. However, Berlin still bares the scars of decades of separation between east and west. Photojournalist Kelly Gorham has studied the wall, and other DDR buildings looking at the structures as modern architectural ruins. This has resulted in the amazing exhibition The Stones Have Memories.

“My guiding creative principal was to let the architecture speak for itself,” Gorham says. “Is it possible to document emotion without photographing a human face?” Looking at the results I think it is. Beautiful and striking, truly capturing the history of the city. Amazing.

I have made a small selection of images, but be sure to check out the entire gallery here!

The great Belgian designer Bernhard Wilhelm, known for his totally unconventional work, is going to have an exhibition in the Groninger Museum. I have seen the exhibition of his work before in Momu Antwerp, and it is definitely worth it. If you have some time on your hand somewhere between 13 december 2009 and 11 april 2010 make sure you go and see this one!
