iPad

January 27th, 2010 | Posted in: technology

It’s official: The iPad is coming our way! Apple has just revealed the long awaited device. As you can see it is a big iPhone, which according to Apple will fill the gap between the iPhone and the MacBook.
Browsing, email, photos, e-books, and videos are the main functions it’ll do better than an iPhone and with a lot more apps on the way it sure looks promising. Especially as a gaming device and an e-reader I think it’ll be very successful. I think the biggest news for Apple is that they are introducing the iBook-store. Just as iTunes and the App Store this will be a very fruitful business for them.

In the US it will be available together with a subscription from AT&T for all the mobile browsing. With prices starting at $499,- for a basic version up to $829,- for the full swing 64gig-3G version.
Besides all the technological coolness you just have to agree with me that Apple has once again delivered a market changing and massively good looking device. Well done Steve!

Gadgets of the Decade

January 5th, 2010 | Posted in: technology

Right after watching a program on TV featuring the incredibly smart and inspiring futurologist Ray Kurzweil yesterday, I bumped into this post at Wired: The Greatest Gadgets of the Past Decade.

The reason for linking these two together is that Kurzweil talked about how our technological knowledge grows exponentially. This can seem hard to grasp, but it is true. I think this post greatly illustrates how technology is changing our everyday lives and how quick it is developing. Technology is moving so fast, that things that were top of the bill less than ten years ago, now seem hopelessly outdated.

Just have a look at some the other gadgets. How ingrained has the iPod become in our lives in such a short time? Remember the first PS2? That Palm Treo phone was top of the bill just 6 years ago…

Just try to imagine where we will be 10 years from today…

Turn your iPhone into a credit card terminal

August 3rd, 2009 | Posted in: technology

square-iphone-paymentOn Coolhunter I read about this smart new application for the iPhone. It actually turns the iPhone into a credit card terminal.

The project, codenamed “Square”, is the brand new iPhone-based payment processing system that’s currently being tested at the new Self Edge store in NYC. Besides to keeping the entire process paperless, Square makes check-out clean and easy.

The innovation is in a small, plastic card reader that fits in to the headphone jack of an iPhone (or iPod Touch) pictured on the left, and some software in the form of an app. The reader transfers the credit card’s swipe data to the app. After that, the employee enters the amount to charge, the customer confirms by scrawling their signature with their finger and then either one enters the customer’s email address to receive the digital receipt via email.

The customer’s receipt, pictured above, includes a map showing the location of the transaction which is handy for those who record, sort and file such things, or people who just want to be reminded where all of their money has gone!

The payment is processed by Square for a small percentage plus a fixed fee; the funds are transferred directly to the store’s bank account, cutting both time and complexity on the processing side.

The great thing about this app is that it allows anyone with an iPhone and a wireless connection to do creditcard transactions. Wherever they are. A brand new direction for applications of the iPhone…

iPhone Nano

May 26th, 2009 | Posted in: technology

ip-nano-5_w500Speculation has been going on for a while about the iPhone Nano, and with a presentation of Apple coming up on the 8th of june rumors about a new iPhone are running wild.
Although it will probably just be some extra memory (32 gig), faster processors and an improved GPS antenna, there are still plenty of rumors about an iPhone Nano. The guys over at T3 have made some amazingly slick artwork on how they expect it to look. It looks so good Apple will have to take this seriously, and consider it for production. Respect to T3!
