Minority Report

February 20th, 2010 | Posted in: technology

While the entire world is waiting for the iPad and other touchscreen computers to change our computing experience, some people have already moved on, further into the future. You’ve all seen or know the scenes from Minority Report in which computers are entirely controled by gestures. Pranav Mistry already presented us with a technology resembling it, and now Oblong Industries is going to make it happen for real with their G-speak technology. Multiple screens, 3d and all controlled by your gestures. Check out the future in the movie above.

Dropbox

January 7th, 2010 | Posted in: technology, websites

I think this might already be one of greatest discoveries for 2010! Meet Dropbox. Dropbox is a service which allows you to access your files from any computer or phone on any location in the world (with an internet connection of course) and share them with anyone you want.

Put your files into your Dropbox on one computer, and they’ll be instantly available on any of your other computers that you’ve installed Dropbox on (works across Windows, Mac, and Linux). The difference with other sharing services is the ease of use. The interface simply is a new folder on your computer, and the program does the sync. itself. And because copies of your files are stored on Dropbox’s secure servers, you can also access them from any computer or mobile device using the Dropbox website. Furthermore, if you have an iPhone, download the free app and access your files from anywhere you want.

You can also share files with your friend easily, simply by dropping them in your public folder and sending the link to your friend. The same is true for pictures. Create galleries online and share these with your friends (Difference with Facebook: Your friends can actually store the hi-res images on their own computer).

These best thing is you can get a 2 gig account for free! 50 gig costs you $9,99 a month and 100 gig wil set you back $19,99 monthly. A bargain right?

I strongly believe this is the way we will work in the future. We will no longer be bound to one device. You simply log in, and access your latest files on any device you have available. Now go get Dropbox!

Gadgets of the Decade

January 5th, 2010 | Posted in: technology

Right after watching a program on TV featuring the incredibly smart and inspiring futurologist Ray Kurzweil yesterday, I bumped into this post at Wired: The Greatest Gadgets of the Past Decade.

The reason for linking these two together is that Kurzweil talked about how our technological knowledge grows exponentially. This can seem hard to grasp, but it is true. I think this post greatly illustrates how technology is changing our everyday lives and how quick it is developing. Technology is moving so fast, that things that were top of the bill less than ten years ago, now seem hopelessly outdated.

Just have a look at some the other gadgets. How ingrained has the iPod become in our lives in such a short time? Remember the first PS2? That Palm Treo phone was top of the bill just 6 years ago…

Just try to imagine where we will be 10 years from today…

A Peek Into The Future: SixthSense Technology

December 15th, 2009 | Posted in: technology

The post I did earlier on Nokia’s vision of the future is rendered totally useless after seeing this. Check out Pranav Mistry demonstrating his SixthSence technology which will make mobile devices useless in the (near future). What an incredibly smart and inspiring man. Minority Report on the go. Amazing!

Handhelds Through Wall

November 12th, 2009 | Posted in: photography, technology

36_overheating-3Technology can be frustrating, very frustrating. Ever felt like tossing your handheld after dying for the 15th time in a videogame, or after arguing on the phone with your girlfriend?? French magazine Amusement sure did, and decided to let their frustration run wild and capture it in pictures, resulting in a nice shoot.

Because you are reading this blog post, you are probably riding the wave of change which is sweeping through the world of media currently. But have you ever realized how fast these things are happening around us, and more importantly how we are causing it? Check out this video in which the impact is summarized in about four minutes, a MUST SEE for anyone with the slightest interest in knowing what is happening out there (which in my opinion is everyone):

Can you imagine there are still people out there who call themselves marketers which don’t use the internet?

ShakeIt: iPhone Polaroid Camera

June 10th, 2009 | Posted in: technology

Picture 1Until the real Polaroid film is available again, the ShakeIt app. for your iPhone will help you satisfy your old school instant picture needs. Classed in the category useless but fun, you take a picture and watch you picture develop on your screen. Shaking your phone will actually make it develop faster (which in real life is one of the greatest myths because flapping the picture around didn’t help speed up the developing process).

iPhone 3GS

Picture 1

Unfortunately, no iPhone Nano. Apple has just announced at WWDC in San Francisco that there will be an updated model of the ‘regular’ iPhone, the iPhone 3GS. As I already expected the updates are mostly in the software.

Summarized, the following improvements will be made:

  • Very much needed longer battery life: Up to 5 hours talking time.
  • It is much faster: up to 4 times faster than the ‘old’ 3G
  • 3 Megapixel autofocus camera, which will also allow you to shoot film.
  • Editing capabilities
  • 32 gig version added
  • Voice recognition

For all the laggards who are stuck with their 3G because of a 2 year subscription there is also news. A new version of the operating system will be available on june 17. Most important new features are:

  • Landscape keyboard in major apps
  • MMS
  • Find my iPhone: This allows you to track your phone through a computer if you have lost it. You can even delete the data from your phone when it has been stolen.
  • TomTom is finally coming to the iPhone for some real navigation

Microsoft taking on the Wii: Project Natal

June 4th, 2009 | Posted in: technology

Microsoft has taken the concept of the Wii and improved it! With Project Natal they have created a motion detector for the Xbox 360, giving it the same capabilities as the Wii with the quality graphics of the Xbox 360.

The big difference with the Wii is that Natal tracks the movements you make with your body instead of a remote. Furthermore it is capable of recognizing and tracking multiple persons so multiplayer games are possible. With additional capabilities like voice and face recognition, custom texture scanning and mapping, video chatting, and all sorts of use-your-whole-body gameplay applications it will be taking the Xbox 360 to a whole different level. Check out the video.

It has a little Minority Report vibe to it, doesn’t it? Unfortunately there is no release date yet.
