Catfish

Another movie on how Facebook can change your life. Story: In late 2007, filmmakers Ariel Schulman and Henry Joost sensed a story unfolding as they began to film the life of Ariel’s brother, Nev. Nev met a girl, Megan, online and they seemed to have something going. They had no idea that their project would lead to the most unsettling months of their lives.

I get a huge Blair Witch Project vibe here. Not sure what to think about it. Seems somewhat interesting. What do you think?

In a theatre near you this fall.

Farewell

Another movie I am looking forward to is Farewell. This movie tells us a true story of an ordinary man who gets caught up in what Ronald Reagan called “one of the most important espionage cases of the 20th century.”

Farewell tells the story of Pierre Froment, a French businessman based in Moscow (Guillaume Canet), who gets in touch with with a senior KGB officer, Grigoriev (Emir Kusturica) who is disenchanted with what the Communist ideal has become under Brezhnev. Grigoriev begins passing him top secret information about the Soviet spy networks in the US. Torn between the fear of putting his wife (Alexandra Maria Lara) and children in danger and the desire to know more, Froment brings the documents to the French government. The information reaches the White House soon after, and brings the Soviet regime to the tipping point of collapse, forcing the KGB to frantically search for the leak, and placing the two men and their families in extreme danger.

This movie by Christian Carion has already been awarded many awards at indy-festivals, and has been named the best political espionage thriller in years. Therefore it is high upon my must-see list. In theaters in September 2010.

Collapsus

Collapsus is a new take on the documentary. This 40 minute documentary, which is available online, sketches our future during what is called ‘peak oil’, the moment oil production is at its maximum. The expected effects of this on our lives and our unavoidable shift to alternative energy sources are the subject of this documentary, which is also described as an ‘energy thriller’.

Interesting, but what makes it special is that it is a ‘hybrid’ documentary. Multiple fictive characters guide the viewer through the storyline through film, animation and interactive elements. A welcome shift from the usual ‘talking heads’ telling the world is going down we see too often if you ask me.

Collapsus was created by the dutch broadcaster VPRO in collaboration with SubmarineChannel. A great project, definitely worth checking out!Have a taste with the trailer below.

Paranormal Activity

Will this movie be the next Blair Witch Project?

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F_UxLEqd074]

After a young, middle class couple moves into what seems like a typical suburban “starter” tract house, they become increasingly disturbed by a presence that may or may not be demonic but is certainly most active in the middle of the night. Especially when they sleep. Or try to…

In theaters near you soon. Good night…
