Hanna

January 20th, 2011 | Posted in: movies

I just bumped into this interesting trailer of the movie Hanna by director Joe Wright. This thriller starring Academy Award nominee Saoirse Ronan (The Lovely Bones, Atonement) tells the story of Hanna.

I paraphrase: “Raised by her father (Eric Bana), an ex-CIA man, in the wilds of Finland, Hanna’s has been raised with one goal only: Making her the perfect assassin. When she is sent into the world by her father on a mission, Hanna journeys stealthily across Europe whilst chased by agents sent by a ruthless intelligence operative, played by Cate Blanchett, with secrets of her own. As she nears her ultimate target, Hanna faces startling revelations about her existence and unexpected questions about her humanity.”

Looks like a proper thriller to me. In theaters this April.

Catfish

Another movie on how Facebook can change your life. Story: In late 2007, filmmakers Ariel Schulman and Henry Joost sensed a story unfolding as they began to film the life of Ariel’s brother, Nev. Nev met a girl, Megan, online and they seemed to have something going. They had no idea that their project would lead to the most unsettling months of their lives.

I get a huge Blair Witch Project vibe here. Not sure what to think about it. Seems somewhat interesting. What do you think?

In a theatre near you this fall.

Sucker Punch

Zack Snyder, the director who also brought you 300 and Watchmen has another visual marvel coming our way. Sucker Punch is an  action fantasy movie that takes us into the imaginary world of a young girl. This dream world provides the ultimate escape from her not so bright reality. “Unrestrained by the boundaries of time and place, she is free to go where her mind takes her, but her incredible adventures blur the lines between what’s real and what is imaginary… with potentially tragic consequences.”

Visually it looks like this is going to be a treat. Incredible graphics and I love the 1950′s retro-futuristic style. Let’s hope the story is any good and we have a winner!

In theaters in March 2011.

FrICTION

June 28th, 2010 | Posted in: movies

For FrICTION, filmmaker Cullen Hoback (Monster Camp, 2007) takes us to a private high school where he writes a script about a real couple and a student who comes between them. Through the process of making the film, hidden truths about the real lives of the actors playing themselves are revealed, and the line between fiction and reality fade. Blending the original “intended” film with rehearsals and documentary elements, Friction breaks the wall that separates fiction from reality, challenging the very real lives of everyone involved. What remains is part documentary, part fiction.

I really want to see this movie and see how everything turns out. Making it even more interesting is the fact that the entire movie was produced with a budget of $100,-!! Amazing isn’t it? One thing is certain: Cullen Hoback has taken unconventional storytelling to another level. In cinemas from September 2010.

Farewell

June 23rd, 2010 | Posted in: movies

Another movie I am looking forward to is Farewell. This movie tells us a true story of an ordinary man who gets caught up in what Ronald Reagan called “one of the most important espionage cases of the 20th century.”

Farewell tells the story of Pierre Froment, a French businessman based in Moscow (Guillaume Canet), who gets in touch with with a senior KGB officer, Grigoriev (Emir Kusturica) who is disenchanted with what the Communist ideal has become under Brezhnev. Grigoriev begins passing him top secret information about the Soviet spy networks in the US. Torn between the fear of putting his wife (Alexandra Maria Lara) and children in danger and the desire to know more, Froment brings the documents to the French government. The information reaches the White House soon after, and brings the Soviet regime to the tipping point of collapse, forcing the KGB to frantically search for the leak, and placing the two men and their families in extreme danger.

This movie by Christian Carion has already been awarded many awards at indy-festivals, and has been named the best political espionage thriller in years. Therefore it is high upon my must-see list. In theaters in September 2010.

Somewhere

June 21st, 2010 | Posted in: movies

I just realized I haven’t posted on movies for a while, so I decided to dive into the world of upcoming movies and see what caught my attention. The first one to do so was Somewhere, by Sofia Coppola. The movie is about bad boy actor Johnny Marco (Stephen Dorff) who is living a life filled with sex, drugs and award shows. Until his eleven year old daughter Cleo, played by Elle Fanning, shows up to stay with him. This forces him to re-think his life.

The trailer immediately makes me think of Lost In Translation, I guess because of Coppola’s talent for selecting great music. Let’s hope Somewhere will be just as good! Set to be released by the end of this year.

Super 8 by J.J. Abrams

May 14th, 2010 | Posted in: movies

Super 8 is the new movie by director J.J. Abrams, whom you might know of small successes like Lost, Alias, Mission Impossible III and Star Trek. This man is the king of building up hypes around his projects. Super 8 is no exeption.  Just like he did with Cloverfield, expect this to be the first in a series of teases. For now, we just have the trailer below, and this viral site.

Amazing to see that blogs have already popped up (or where created by the producers) around this movie, and speculation is going wild. As Abrams has teamed up with Steven Spielberg to produce this movie, my expectations are great.

I’ll keep you posted on this one.

Machete

May 10th, 2010 | Posted in: movies

Remember those ‘fake’ trailers (example 1,2,3) which played before Robert Rodriguez’ en Quinten Tarrantino’s Grindhouse features? We’ll one of them, Machete, has made it to a full feature movie. And it looks awesome. Just check out the trailer:

Look at that cast! This one has to be brilliant! Of course Danny Trejo plays Machete, but the rest is pretty impressive too: Michelle Rodriguez, Jessica Alba, Robert DeNiro, and Steven Seagal. And lets not forget the the return of Don Johnson on the big screen! Hilarious! This ensemble is directed by Robert Rodriguez, who isn’t holding back on this one! Set for release in September 2010. See you there!

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies: Dawn of the Dreadfuls

Pretty cool that books are getting trailers now too! Pride and Prejudice and Zombies: Dawn of the Dreadfuls. This prequel to the hugely popular Jane Austen zombie spinoff novel Pride and Prejudice and Zombies now has its own bloody yet proper video teaser. The book comes out March 23. Check it out below:

Predators

March 15th, 2010 | Posted in: movies

I guess this one is for all the fans out there. When I was a kid I used to watch the original Predator over and over again. After this first one featuring Arnold ‘If It Bleeds We Can Kill It’ Schwarzenegger the series went totally crappy if you ask me. However, now that Robert Rodriguez is picking up the franchise it has made me somewhat exited again. I never expected to see Adrien Brody in a movie like this, and it probably won’t win him his next Oscar, but it must mean that is going to be half decent at least. Check out the sneak preview below:

The ‘real’ trailer will be released soon, so look out for an update. And here is the official trailer:

In a theater near you from June 7th 2010.
