Web 3.0

June 7th, 2010 | Posted in: technology

As you know I am a bit of a sucker for new technology. And while the dust of the web 2.0 revolution hasn’t really settled yet, the smart guys have already started talking about web 3.0.

Web 2.0 was all about user generated content. In this time we have created such a tremendous amount of data that it has become hard to find the stuff you like. Just Google ‘camera review’ and you’ll see what I mean. Too much info! As I interpret this, web 3.0 will be all about linking this data, creating relationships and giving it meaning so it becomes easier to navigate. A bit like what I do here at Subtielman for you on a small scale: filter the data.

The movie below, directed by NYU Psychology and Journalism student Kate Ray, explored the topic in a comprehensible way. However, the movie tends to be on the nerdy side of life. But hey, it’s the future. Put a little effort in in!

Here a very interesting piece of advertising through social networks for Ikea, created by Forsman & Bodenfors from Sweden. The movie below explains it all:

Brilliant work.

Svpply

November 24th, 2009 | Posted in: fashion, websites

Like the ffffound of e-commerce, SVPPLY is a retailing bookmarking site, allowing selected users to recommend a wide range of products, all presented in a clean, uncluttered space. The result is an amazing place to go for some inspiration. Stuff you’ll find there include Apparel, Accessories, Shoes, Technological stuff, Media and Home-decoration.
Mouse-over and you immediately see the price and where to buy. Real easy. To make your surfing even more convenient (and more productive), you can browse by category, price and gender. I’m surely checking this site daily from now on. Go check it out!

Forever Beta

beta

In the ‘Foreverism’ trend report by Trendwatching.com there is a piece about ‘Forever-Beta’. Having graduated on this topic, I was immediately drawn into the subject again, and just  had to share it’s simple brilliance with you.

Everybody knows that before a product gets launched, there is always a period of testing it in ‘beta’. After the feedback of the beta-testers comes back the product is improved and launched. Nothing new right? What this theory argues is that in the future products will have to be in beta-mode forever as they reach different groups of consumers with different needs. What will happen then is that what started out as one product will evolve into multiple variations of the same product, satisfying consumers from multiple markets. Here again we see Chris Anderson’s Long Tail theory in action. In the future, there will be less and less mass market products and niche products will thrive.

Going into Forever Beta mode is what companies will have to start doing soon in order to secure existence in the future. I’ll bet you there are countless start ups out there already involving their customers continuously in their product development process, taking the principle of web 2.0 into the offline world. This is slowly but certainly taking away the customers of the large and slow incumbents which are too busy defending their ‘present’ and forgetting about tomorrow…

Hermes 2.0

June 3rd, 2009 | Posted in: fashion, marketing

cravate

This is the sort of stuff I like to read about. Finally a ‘traditional’ fashion company is moving towards crowdsourcing. As far as I know this is a first for the stuck in the 20th century fashion behemoths.

In a collaboration with Designboom, Hermes is giving designers from around the world, no, even better, everybody able to draw, the chance to design a tie for the renowned fashion house. The winners’ design will actually be produced and the winner will receive a royalty based contract. Would look pretty good on your CV right?

Click here to download the template and check out the rules of the contest.  You can enter the competition up to the 1st of August. Start designing!

Of course I will keep you posted on the results. If you decide to enter, send me your design!

Lego Architecture

May 25th, 2009 | Posted in: art, marketing, misc.

I don’t know about you guys, but every time I pass a wall of Lego boxes in a toy store I get this urge to buy one. I remember standing staring at these walls for hours as a kid. Building complete villages, castles and pirate ships. Unfortunately I would be interrupted roughly by my mom or dad dragging me out, sometimes buying me (only) one of these boxes. Now that I can afford it, the temptation is still there and sometimes it almost irresistible. That why little nephews are so much valued I guess!

But Lego is going to serve us! After the techie Mindstorms they are now going to put put the Lego Architecture series. Great architects’ work and famous landmarks will be Lego’ed. In the Lego Architecture series you will be able to buy sets for building the Empire State Building, Chicago’s John Hancock Building and Sears Tower, and the Seattle Space Needle.

Perhaps the most exciting release are two buildings by the renowned architect Frank Lloyd buildings: The amazing Fallingwater and the Guggenheim Museum in New York.

Rumors are that the next series will include work by another achitectural legend Le Corbusier. Great stuff!

As Lego has proved before they are one of the companies succesfully tapping into their user communities. This series was created in collaboration with a Lego fanatic called Adam Reed Tucker. He is a part of  Brickstructures Inc who have been building some amazing stuff. (Check it out here). Again, a great example of Lego turning into a platform for the creations of its users. Brilliant.

Pope 2.0

May 24th, 2009 | Posted in: marketing

Picture 1It has taken them a while, but the catholic church has finally joined us in the 21st century. After they discovered YouTube a while ago, they have now launched the website pope2you.net. This site  includes facebook apps, a wiki, iPhone apps and links to the before mentioned YouTube channel. Welcome Catholic church! Respect for joining us in the online jungle. I hope the holy guys in Rome realize that living online means sharing thoughts and listening to what your users want, instead of just preaching. Also, unfortunately for them, the internet is still largely about content. And since most of their ideas are still stuck in the 1600′s, they have a long way to go!
